January – June 2008. For trombone and motion sensors. Composed for David Purser. Premiered on 17th June 2008, Birmingham Conservatoire.
Using motion sensors attached to the right arm of the performer, In Flux takes as its inspiration the infinite positions of the trombone slide.
The performer affects the electronic sounds by simply moving the slide and blowing into the instrument.
Just as the trombone can move seamlessly from one pitch to the next, In Flux slowly morphs between trombone-inspired electronic sounds without clear segmentations or sections.

Most of the score is text instructions, but a couple of sections require precise synchronisation between trombone and pre-composed electronic sounds, hence the computer monitor with live scrolling curser (see below).
