in Compositions
October 2006. An interactive multimedia art installation exhibited at the SightSonic Digital Arts Festival, 2006, in York.
Past Tense is an interactive sound and video installation exploring the relationship between a community, its subjects and its history and future. Individual visitors directly control the video and sound, resulting in a personal as well as group experience.
This multimedia installation draws all its material from live events including the visitors themselves and is inspired by the chiming of York Minster bell.
Visitors will experience their own personal soundscape, generated after fragmenting and re-assembling the sound and video of the bell, in each visitors own guise. The idea of regenerating, or interpreting, historical material of the past (bell) to reflect the present (person) is an important aspect in the concept of this installation. The dialectic between the static and immortal, and dynamic and ever-changing adds to the tension. Hence the title Past Tense.
