Piece for PowerBook and Cello

in Compositions

October 2006.

The sound of the cello is amplified and played back through two on-stage loudspeakers, one placed on top of the other. A PowerBook G4 processes sound from its internal microphone. The modified sound is played back through the two on-stage loudspeakers.

Sound from the loudspeakers ‘leaks’ into the PowerBook G4 causing audio feedback. Due to the sound processing algorithms employed by software loaded onto the computer, the otherwise noisy and uncontrollable feedback is tamed. The sound from the cello colours and controls the timbre of the feedback as does the position of the PowerBook G4 in relation to the on-stage speakers.

The rich and complex sonorities heard are a result of using real-world live sound and filtering in part thanks to the resonant properties of the PowerBook G4, which has become an expressive musical instrument, much like the cello.

Above video by Keir Williams. PowerBook performed by Jonathan Green, cello played by Jamie Bullock.
